IMAP finally supported on GMail
Google has finally started providing IMAP , making them the first free email service on the internet to provide both POP3 and IMAP access to its users. POP and IMAP will allow you to use an email client such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla ThunderBird so that you can connect to the net, download all mails, disconnect the net, read the mails, write your reply and then send them by connecting to net again. So time is saved. the client will down load the mails in the background, so you need to know nothing, virtually.
But for IMAP all the emails are stored on the server itself. The local computer may create a copy temporarily. So all the mails are accessible from everywhere.
Although there is such a difference between the two protocols GMail team has done it in such a way that even if you are using POP3 you have an option of keeping a copy of every mail on the server itself.
Supported Mail Clients
* Outlook Express (Windows)
* Outlook 2003 (Windows)
* Outlook 2007 (Windows)
* Apple Mail
* Windows Mail
* Thunderbird 2.0
* Other* : The server and port configuration for other email clients
The difference between IMAP and POP
The main difference between IMAP and POP protocols is that if you are using POP the mails are locally stored on the computer you use your email client. That is if you have configured Mozilla Thunderbird on your home computer and office computer for the same email address "blahblah@blah.com" the email you receive on your home computer won't be accessible on work computer. This applies to email send by tou too. All the email are stored locally only.But for IMAP all the emails are stored on the server itself. The local computer may create a copy temporarily. So all the mails are accessible from everywhere.
